March

Desert roses and calmer seas

March brings warmer days and is one of the main months for the pink desert-rose flowers. The flowering season extends beyond a single week: different trees and locations bloom at different times, with the display often continuing into April. Calmer seasonal conditions make March a strong choice for a trip that combines the island’s landscapes with snorkelling and boat outings. Clear nights also suit stargazing. Carry drinking water and sun protection, and start longer walks before the midday heat.

Exploring Socotra

Across
the island.

The route

A guided trip takes you from the dunes at Arher and the lagoon at Detwah to the dragon blood trees of Firmihin. Travel between places is by 4×4, with walks and boat outings forming part of the itinerary. The length and order of the route depend on your flights and the trip you choose.

The pace

Look beyond the list of stops. Time on the road, the length of the walks, and where you stay each night all shape the visit. A route with fewer stops leaves more time for a longer walk, photography, or an afternoon by the water.

Sleeping & eating

Life
at camp.

Where you sleep

Camping keeps you close to the landscapes on your route, from the coast to the plateaus. Your operator provides the equipment, but tents, bedding and washing facilities vary between trips. Some itineraries also include hotel nights in Hadibo.

At the table

The crew prepares meals along the way, with rice, fish, flatbread, fruit and tea among the usual offerings. Share allergies and dietary requirements before booking, so your operator can explain what the camp kitchen can provide.

People & customs

In the
villages.

Local Customs

Islanders are often welcoming and generous, and you may be invited to sit for tea. Your guide can help with introductions and conversation, and explain local customs along the way. In towns and villages, choose loose, modest clothing. Women may prefer not to be photographed; ask permission before taking anyone’s picture and respect their answer.

On the ground

A few
essentials.

Cash & payments

Bring clean, undamaged US dollar notes, including smaller denominations for tips and purchases. Plan to pay in cash rather than rely on cards or ATMs. Allow for personal spending as well as any tour balance due on arrival.

Staying connected

Mobile coverage is limited, and internet access depends on the trip. Some operators provide Starlink at camp. Download maps and save travel documents offline before arrival, and bring a power bank for use between charging opportunities.

What to pack

Pack for days outdoors: light clothing, walking shoes with a firm grip, a hat and sun protection. Add a headtorch for camp, a light layer for higher ground and a small daypack for walks. Carry drinking water, and take your litter back with you.

Visa

Your Socotra visa.

How it works

You cannot apply online or on arrival as an independent traveler. A licensed Socotra operator sponsors the permit. They need a color scan of your passport bio page, valid 6+ months.

Cost

$150–$200 depending on the operator; some quote in pounds or euros. Ask whether it is included in your package.

Timing

A few days to three weeks. Many operators email a copy to print for Jeddah check-in; the original is collected at SCT.

Validity

Usually 30 days. Issued close to departure.

GCC passports

Citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE generally do not need the Socotra tourist visa, still confirm with your operator.

Not a mainland visa

A Socotra visa is not valid for mainland Yemen, and a mainland visa is not valid for Socotra. Cairo/Aden itineraries need both.

Jeddah transit

Collecting checked luggage in Jeddah means entering Saudi Arabia. You need a separate Saudi visa unless exempt; your Socotra visa does not cover it. Eligible travellers can apply online for a multiple-entry tourist eVisa, covering both the outward and return connections.

Some operators state Israeli citizens cannot be processed. Check before you pay a deposit.
